MazdaĪll-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on the CX-50 but the system primarily drives the front wheels, but sends power to the rear wheels as needed for traction. The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is about the same size as the CX-5, but it’s an all-new model that shares its platform with the CX-30 and redesigned Mazda3. While most drivers will stick with regular-grade fuel, Mazda advertises that the turbocharged engine makes 256 horsepower on 93 octane gasoline. Both engines use a six-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged 2.5-liter making 227 horsepower comes in Turbo, T Meridian, T Premium and T Premium Plus trims. It comes with two engine choices, starting with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 187 horsepower and available in six trim levels of S, S Select, S Preferred, S Preferred Plus, S Premium and S Premium Plus. However, at 31.4 cubic-feet of cargo space, it trails most for capacity. The CX-50 has slightly less headroom than those but holds its own for legroom, although all can be a bit cramped in the rear seats. Toyota’s RAV4 also offers an adventure-themed variation. The five-seater CX-50 faces its sibling CX-5 as a competitor, as well as SUVs such as the Ford Bronco Sport, Hyundai Tucson and Subaru’s Forester and Outback, both of which now offer even more dedicated off-road Wilderness trims. It’s also available with packages that add all-terrain tires, rocker panel protection, splash guards and a roof platform for accessory tents. The new 50’s target audience is buyers who love the great outdoors, and so it has more ground clearance and more aggressive styling than the aging 5, which is great on pavement but not much of an off-roader. An all-new compact SUV for 2023, the Mazda CX-50 is similarly-sized to the company’s best-selling CX-5 and shares its engines, but rides on a new platform also used for the CX-30 and redesigned Mazda3.
